The Blockälteste comes over to Eliezer and tells him that the doctor can't do anymore for his father, and neither can he. Answer: The life lesson is that it's every man for himself. It affects the character because he sees that there's nothing left that he can do, and that helping his father will only decrease the chance of his survival. Name: Memory moment Pg #: 100 Description: Eliezer talks about the men fighting over the bread in the wagon, and how years later a similar event happened in Aden. The people on the ship threw coins to "natives". People fought over them, but Elie particularly saw two children strangling each other in the water. He shouts to one of the ladies throwing coins and tells her to stop, but she says that she likes giving to charity. Answer: I think this memory is important because it reminded Eliezer of the single piece of bread on the train, and how hungry and desperate those people were. I think it reminded him of himself.
