Ready Player One is a great book so far, and might actually be my favorite book! The backstory leading up to the main story is genius, and is actually a possible thing, while still having some impossibilities that the sci-fi genre is known for. An example of this is stacking trailers on top of eachother. I understand that population is a problem in the future, but stacking trailers is kind of stupid. If the metal supports broke or their was too much weight on top of the stack, the whole thing will collapse and likely knock over other stacks to. This is not a smart solution to overpopulation, unless their intent is to let the stacks get knocked down to reduce the population... hmm...
Another thing that I'm having trouble understanding is the OASIS system itself. When it describes the physical thing it sounds like virtual reality goggles that we are familiar with today, and also gloves that allow you to control the character's hand movements in the game. Then how does your character walk around? Do you control them with your hands? This leads me think that it is more like the matrix where you actually feel like you're in the virtual world, rather than just looking into goggles. I hope the OASIS system will be explained more later in the book. Now that I have the confusing things out of the way, let me talk about the characters. I think the main character, Wade, is a very relatable person. If he's in danger, you sort of feel like your in danger to. I also like the other characters, and how the author keeps reminding you that they might not be who you think they are. It makes you wonder if Wade knows any of the players in real life, without knowing it. It also adds just a bit of mystery, which makes you wonder if he can trust the people he meets. Those are the reasons why I like Ready Player One, and I am wondering what the rest of the book will be like. I highly recommend you read it!

Two celebrities that I would love to be friends with are Bill Nye the Science Guy and Morgan Freeman. I would want to be friends with Bill Nye because he's super smart and cool. If I have any science questions, I could just ask him. Not only is he a science genius, he seems like a funny and reliable guy. I could trust him which is one of the most important things in a friendship.
The second person I would want to be friends with is Morgan Freeman. I think he has a really cool voice, and he's in one of my favorite movies, The Dark Knight. He seems like a really relaxed and wise person, who could maybe shed some of his wisdom on me. I think he would have a really cool life story that I know I would enjoy hearing. 1. In a paragraph or two compare (similarities) and contrast (differences) Night and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
Night and the boy in the striped pajamas are most similar in the setting. Both take place during the holocaust and at the camp Auschwitz, however the main characters are on the different sides of the fence. Elie was inside many camps including Auschwitz, while Bruno was in the one location and was not a prisoner. Bruno also has an entire family while Elie only had his father. I think this makes Elie more relatable to Schmuel then, because they both live inside concentration camps, and have lost most of their family. Elie and Schmuel also go through terrible beatings by soldiers, Idek in Night, and the unnamed soldier in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Finally, Night had a somewhat happy ending with Elie being liberated, but sadly his father dying, while The Boy in the Striped Pajamas had a sadder and more emotional ending that didn't end very happily. 2. Choose 1 character from Night or one character from Boy in the Striped Pajamas to analyze. Make note (explain) of their physical appearance, character traits, feelings, demeanor, thoughts, etc. Elsa, or Bruno's mother changes a lot throughout the movie. She starts out pretty normal, but as she finds out more about the terrible place they've moved too she becomes much different. She becomes extremely tired and weak but adamantly against Ralf's job and the Nazi party in general. Her opinions match those of the grandmother by the end of the movie. 3. How have your thoughts or understandings of the Holocaust changed since completing this unit (background research, Night, Boy in the Striped Pajamas? My thought of the Holocaust hasn't changed much. I think it was a horrible and traumatic experience for people who had to be a part of it and I think it is one of the worst times in history. I did learn more about concentration camps and more of the details of the Holocaust which I didn't know before. It helped me understand the book and movie better than I would've. 4. Which did you like better and why (book or movie)? I like the story of the book better, but the movie is more visual so it has a more dramatic impact, in my opinion. 5. Any final thoughts or questions you have regarding either the book, movie, or Holocaust in general? How could the Holocaust been prevented? Name: Aha moment
Pg #: 82 Description: Eliezer talks to his father about whether to stay and heal but be separated, or evacuate together. Eliezer says that he later found out that the Russians came and liberated the prisoners two days after the evacuation. Answer: Eliezer could have been free from the camp if he would've stayed, but now he has to keep going and endure more terrible things. Name: Words of the wiser Pg #: 110 Description: Eliezer is caring for his father who is very sick and close to death. The Blockälteste comes over to Eliezer and tells him that the doctor can't do anymore for his father, and neither can he. Answer: The life lesson is that it's every man for himself. It affects the character because he sees that there's nothing left that he can do, and that helping his father will only decrease the chance of his survival. Name: Memory moment Pg #: 100 Description: Eliezer talks about the men fighting over the bread in the wagon, and how years later a similar event happened in Aden. The people on the ship threw coins to "natives". People fought over them, but Elie particularly saw two children strangling each other in the water. He shouts to one of the ladies throwing coins and tells her to stop, but she says that she likes giving to charity. Answer: I think this memory is important because it reminded Eliezer of the single piece of bread on the train, and how hungry and desperate those people were. I think it reminded him of himself. If I was president, my first three priorities would be to reduce the cost of going to college, a ban on all petroleum based water bottles and plastic bags, and converting us to the metric system. My first priority, reducing the cost of going to college, would make it much more affordable for people. More people would be able to get a better education and a better job. I think this would really make our country better.
My second priority, banning petroleum based water bottles and plastic bags, would make it so we use less of our precious oil. It would be nearly impossible to ban everything plastic at this point, but water bottles and plastic bags would be a good start to switching from petroleum based plastics to other substitutes, like bio-plastics. I would ban plastic bags and water bottles because even though they are recyclable, lots of them end up in landfills and take decades to break down. If I ban them completely then we can use the petroleum for things we really need. My last priority, converting us to the metric system, would make things so much easier. It would make it so we have a more universal measurement system so we wouldn't have to have conversion formulas. If we just used the metric system it would be a lot easier to learn too. Kids wouldn't have to get confused with inches and centimeters, they would just have one system that makes sense. Even though it might not be a huge change, I think the U.S. could really benefit from switching to the metric system. Winter break started off great, but after christmas I got really bored. I can't believe I'm saying this, but winter break should be a little shorter! I like having time off, but if you have too much time and you get everthing done you wanted too, then what? School fills in 7 hours of your day, and when you don't have it, you don't know what to do. Chirstmas was pretty amazing though, like always. On Christmas Eve we kept our tradition of eating spaghetti and meatballs, watching the Polar Express, and reading the Night Before Christmas. Christmas day was great as well. We ate krepes for breakfast, and just chilled while opening presents. I also would have talked about my experience downhill skiing for the first time with the Boy Scouts, but it got cancelled because of icy roads. That was pretty much my break, kind of fun but kind of boring.
This article talks about essential skills kids should learn before they turn 18. These skills are essential because they will help you get a job in the future, be able to talk to people, and be able to take care of yourself on your on. I think these are realitic skills because they all have good reasons to back them up, and all the succesful people I know have learned these skills. I would say that I have learned most of them, but still need to learn my way around town and how to manage my money. I can tell that I don't know these skills now because, I don't know my way around some places in Iowa City, and I impulse buy a lot. If I see something I like, even if I don't really need it, I usually buy it. I need to learn how to manage my own money better and only get things that I need or really want.
If I could live inside any video game, it would be the Sims. There's a few reasons for this decision, the first being that I played the Sims 3 a lot when I was younger with my siblings. We all found humor in the body size adjustment tool. You could turn a super skinny guy into a sumo wrestler with the click of a button. The Sims 3 was actually the reason my dad decided to grow a goatee. My sister was making our family and decided to slap facial hair on him and we all loved it, so he decided to bring it into reality. The second reason is that it's normal human life. It would be easy to adjust compared to if I wanted to live in the world of pac-man, where there's only yellow mouths and ghosts, I wouldn't really fit in. The third and final reason is that life is so much easier! You can literaly go from a high five to getting married an hour later. You get things done more efficientaly because an hour in the sims is like 30 seconds in our time. Wait, actually that would kind of be a bad thing, because we die quicker. Besides that though, I think the Sims would be a great game to live in.
First, I am thankful for myself. If I didn't exist I wouldn't be typing this right now, I wouldn't be able to eat food, I would never have seen star wars, and I would make my dad even more outnumbered because he would be the only boy in my family.
Secondly, I am thankful for my family. If they didn't exist I never would have been born. I love all my aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandma, and grandpa. Board games are really fun to play with them and the food my family makes is amazing. Thirdly, I am thankful for food. You can't have thanksgiving without food. You can't live without food. I love all the variety and different flavors and the cozy feeling you get when your finished eating that makes you sleepy (it feels like Christmas). Finally, I am thankful for all holidays, but especially Christmas. I love thinking back in time to the creation of the holiday and remembering what we're remembering the holiday for. When your feeling sad and a holiday comes around, you feel happy all of the sudden. That's what I'm thankful for! :) |
