1. In a paragraph or two compare (similarities) and contrast (differences) Night and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
Night and the boy in the striped pajamas are most similar in the setting. Both take place during the holocaust and at the camp Auschwitz, however the main characters are on the different sides of the fence. Elie was inside many camps including Auschwitz, while Bruno was in the one location and was not a prisoner. Bruno also has an entire family while Elie only had his father. I think this makes Elie more relatable to Schmuel then, because they both live inside concentration camps, and have lost most of their family. Elie and Schmuel also go through terrible beatings by soldiers, Idek in Night, and the unnamed soldier in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Finally, Night had a somewhat happy ending with Elie being liberated, but sadly his father dying, while The Boy in the Striped Pajamas had a sadder and more emotional ending that didn't end very happily. 2. Choose 1 character from Night or one character from Boy in the Striped Pajamas to analyze. Make note (explain) of their physical appearance, character traits, feelings, demeanor, thoughts, etc. Elsa, or Bruno's mother changes a lot throughout the movie. She starts out pretty normal, but as she finds out more about the terrible place they've moved too she becomes much different. She becomes extremely tired and weak but adamantly against Ralf's job and the Nazi party in general. Her opinions match those of the grandmother by the end of the movie. 3. How have your thoughts or understandings of the Holocaust changed since completing this unit (background research, Night, Boy in the Striped Pajamas? My thought of the Holocaust hasn't changed much. I think it was a horrible and traumatic experience for people who had to be a part of it and I think it is one of the worst times in history. I did learn more about concentration camps and more of the details of the Holocaust which I didn't know before. It helped me understand the book and movie better than I would've. 4. Which did you like better and why (book or movie)? I like the story of the book better, but the movie is more visual so it has a more dramatic impact, in my opinion. 5. Any final thoughts or questions you have regarding either the book, movie, or Holocaust in general? How could the Holocaust been prevented?
